The NCEMNA Mentee Program, part of the NCEMNA Nurse Scientist Stimulation Program, has helped more than 248 nurses so far. Expanding on the benefits of the program, mentees are continuing to greater achievements and accolades.


Eugenia Millender
When catastrophe struck the island nation of Haiti with a magnitude 7 earthquake in January of this year, nurses from all over the world responded. Among those moved to action was Eugenia Millender, MS, RN, CCRN, 2009 NCEMNA mentee and a participant in the 2010 NCEMNA Writing for Publication Program. For almost a week, Eugenia and her team traveled to Haiti and provided a wide range of healthcare services using whatever resources were available. Eugenia wrote about her experience in “Haiti: A Firsthand View” in the April 2010 issue of the American Journal of Nursing. Her article is featured in the Special Report: Disaster in Haiti.


Mirian Zavala
The 14th Annual Conference of the National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA) included at least two honors for Mirian Zavala, MS, RN, 2006 NCEMNA mentee and a participant in the 2010 NCEMNA Writing for Publication Program. Mirian gave a poster presentation on chronic exposure to community violence and children’s academic performance. She also received the NHMA Leadership Award.
