Aetna/NCEMNA Scholars Program

Goal and Objectives

Goal
To increase the number of ethnic minority nurses and socialize them into the research agenda to eliminate health disparities.

Objectives

  1. Promote the academic and professional development of ethnic minority Scholars
  2. Develop and establish a Scholar selection process
  3. Establish a Scholar mentoring program.

Selection Process

The process for selecting each the Aetna/NCEMNA scholar is the following:

Each ethnic nurse association will announce the Aetna/NCEMNA Scholar’s Program to their members by e-mail to chapter presidents, Web announcements, and newsletters.
Each Associations’ Awards & Scholarships Committee will provide the application, monitor, and select the process of the nominee.

The general guidelines used in the selection of the nominee include

  • Being a member of the respective association
  • Currently attending or making application to a four-year degree program or masters degree program
  • A letter of reference re: academic performance, honors, etc.
  • Demonstration of leadership/involvement in the ethnic community
  • Statement of career goals.

Once the nominee has been selected, it is the responsibility of the Association to forward the nominee’s application packet and information to NCEMNA President, Dr. Betty Smith Williams.

  • The nominee will be presented with the Aetna/NCEMNA Award letter at the corresponding Association annual conference.
  • Each of the Scholars will receive a letter of congratulations from NCEMNA.
  • Each of the Scholars will be contacted by NCEMNA (corresponding Scholars Committee member) beginning in September to establish academic and professional goals.
  • Each month, the Scholars will be contacted by NCEMNA to review academic and professional goals. The Scholar will be responsible for reporting/accounting to NCEMNA their progress each month.
